New Prodigy Marketing Group is happy to announce the launch of a brand new website for the Rockyview Lacrosse Association (www.rockyviewlacrosse.com).
This was a unique project and a great example of an implementation of our Wordpress Website Package. What makes this website design package unique is that it is built on the Wordpress framework (Wordpress-websites as we call them). Wordpress-websites are unique because they offer amazing flexibility with respect to content management, but that flexibility does come at a bit of a cost, which is some trade-offs on the design front and how content is displayed.
Wordpress Website vs. Custom Designed Website
Now don’t get us wrong. When we design a Wordpress website it is very much a custom design. However, within the context of this discussion we use the terms “Custom Designed Website” and “Wordpress Website” so that you realize these are 2 very different approaches to designing your website.
When it comes to designing and building your web presence on the Wordpress platform, there are some trade-offs that you should be aware of. The primary trade-off is making sure Wordpress offers you the right balance between managing your own content, the look-and-feel of your website, and the way information is displayed to your users.
Wordpess is a very flexible, very robust, Content Management System (CMS). What this means is that in its most basic form, anyone assigned administrative rights can manage the content on your website without any specialized knowledge of HTML/CSS or special programming. The platform is designed to let you add, remove, or modify pages, or the content that exists on those pages, as well as enhance the base functionality of your website by adding plugins.
So what’s the catch?
Like all Content Management Systems, there are some restrictions with respect to design (look-and-feel, layout) that you wouldn’t see with a custom designed website. A custom designed website is 100% scratch-coded and scratch-designed, which of course means you can customize the precise layout of all page elements (i.e. text, images, navigation) on all pages, as well as the look-and-feel (i.e. color pallets).
A Wordpress website has restrictions on how you can layout your design, how content is displayed, and even some restrictions with respect to the color scheme of your design. Wordpress was originally designed as a blog platform only, which means at its core, it was designed to showcase content in the “post” format. The platform has evolved considerably over the last few years but the basic function of Wordpress remains largely the same.
Which Approach is Right for You?
The key question of course is which approach is right for you ยป a Wordpress Website or a Custom Designed Website?
The answer really depends on what your particular needs are. You must ask yourself if you are willing to sacrifice a little in terms of control over design, look-and-feel of your website, in order to gain complete control over your content. Remember, if you don’t have a Content Management System (CMS) then each time you need to update your website, you must outsource that to your web design company (and that’s not free). Some company’s, like ours, offer deals for people who need content updates, but often having that independence from a specalists can be comforting to the wallet.
At the end of the day, we run about 60:40 split between Custom Designed Websites and Wordpress Websites. Often the determining factor is whether or not you have any custom functionality required for your web presence, which often means custom coding, which means a Wordpress website is out.
We will work with you to determine your needs so you make the right decision on which approach you should take. In the meantime, have a look at RockyviewLacrosse.com to get a sense of what a Wordpress website can look like.
